About Backyard Unlimited
Backyard Unlimited is a family-owned and operated business founded in 2009 by Nathan Martin, who has deep roots in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania — the heart of Amish country. After relocating to California in 2007, Nathan recognized a gap in the market for quality backyard structures built with the same craftsmanship associated with Amish builders in Pennsylvania. In August 2009, Backyard Unlimited partnered with Amish artisans from Lancaster County to become California's first local supplier of authentic, Amish-made sheds and backyard structures.
Operating out of a showroom in Rocklin, California, Backyard Unlimited serves homeowners throughout the Greater Sacramento Area. Their product range includes storage sheds, gazebos, pavilions, pergolas, playsets, outdoor furniture, and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).
ADU Design and Installation Services
Thanks to recently updated state and local laws, it has become more accessible for California homeowners to add a detached or attached living unit to their property. Backyard Unlimited positions itself as a specialist in designing and installing Accessory Dwelling Units — commonly referred to as ADUs — throughout the Greater Sacramento Area.
An ADU is a self-contained, smaller living unit located on the lot of an existing single-family home. These structures can serve a variety of purposes, including housing for family members, caregivers, or tenants. There are several types of ADUs that Backyard Unlimited works with:
- Attached ADUs — such as garage conversion projects
- Detached ADUs — also known as carriage houses or backyard cottages
- Repurposed ADUs — such as finished basements converted into living spaces
ADU regulations can vary significantly by municipality, and navigating the permitting process requires specific knowledge. Two key requirements that generally apply are: the structure must be fewer than 1,200 square feet, and the property owner must reside in either the main residence or the ADU itself.
Backyard Unlimited handles the full process in-house. Their team manages design, assembly, and finishing using their own employees — not subcontractors. This approach is intended to maintain consistency and accountability throughout each project. The company states that most general contractors lack sufficient familiarity with ADU laws, which can lead to delays and costly errors. Backyard Unlimited's team has spent over a decade installing hundreds of accessory structures in the Sacramento region and is experienced in getting ADUs permitted and approved.
Factors that influence the overall cost of an ADU project include design fees, site preparation, construction, utility connections, permitting, and interior finishing. Backyard Unlimited provides guidance through each of these stages to help homeowners understand what to expect from their investment.
Custom Sheds, Gazebos, and Backyard Structures
Beyond ADUs, Backyard Unlimited offers a range of Amish-crafted outdoor structures designed and built with premium materials. Their sheds are custom-tailored to individual spaces and are available in a variety of configurations, including:
- Storage sheds
- Garage sheds
- Office and studio sheds
- Gazebos and pavilions
- Pergolas
- Greenhouses
- Dog kennels and chicken coops
Homeowners have been using these structures for purposes beyond simple storage — converting them into home offices, creative studios, and personal retreats. Each structure is designed in California and built using materials sourced through their Amish builder partnerships, reflecting the craftsmanship traditions passed down through generations in Lancaster County.
Backyard Unlimited's showroom is located at 4765 Pacific St., Rocklin, CA 95677, and is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm, and Saturday from 9am to 2pm or by appointment.
