Backyard Living: Compact Yet Full
Like many metropolitan areas, Chicago is a vibrant city that faces the ongoing challenge of providing quality living options for its residents. Backyard dwellings are gaining traction across the country, and Yu & Associates Collaborative took on a project in Wicker Park that reflects this growing trend. The firm worked with two brothers who wanted to create a secondary living space on a shared property while maintaining independent lifestyles.
Taking advantage of Chicago's recently implemented Additional Dwelling Units (ADU) pilot program, Yu & Associates Collaborative designed a functional and well-considered detached ADU built above a two-car garage. The resulting backyard cottage includes a full bedroom, living room, bathroom, office niche, and a kitchen with an island — all within a compact footprint shaped by lot size and city regulations.
Thoughtful Design Within a Compact Footprint
As an ADU builder, Yu & Associates Collaborative approached the space with intentionality. Every element was arranged to ensure occupants feel comfortable despite the limited square footage. High ceilings and large south-facing windows along the roofline bring in natural light and create a sense of openness. The sloped roof's extra height was used to carve out a loft space above the entry stairs — a quiet nook suited for reading or relaxing.
The interior is equipped with all the appliances needed for functional daily living, including an in-unit washer and dryer. On the exterior, vertical siding and thoughtful lighting contribute to a sense of spaciousness, making the structure feel inviting rather than cramped.
Comfort in this accessory dwelling unit also comes from how it interacts with its surroundings. Despite being positioned above a garage and adjacent to an alley, the interior remains notably quiet. Extra insulation in the floor and fiber cement siding help dampen noise, supporting a peaceful environment for work, rest, or daily routines.
ADUs as a Practical Urban Housing Solution
For the Wicker Park brothers, their backyard ADU is more than an extension of the main house. It represents a practical approach to urban living where space is used efficiently, privacy is maintained, and design choices are deliberate.
Beyond this specific project, the work of Yu & Associates Collaborative highlights the broader potential of accessory dwelling units as a housing solution. Whether serving as an independent living space for family members, a rental unit generating additional income, or a dedicated workspace, backyard dwellings offer a level of adaptability that traditional housing often lacks.
As cities like Chicago continue to expand their ADU programs, projects like this one demonstrate how ADU contractors and design firms can contribute to thoughtful, small-scale housing that supports both individual needs and the wider urban environment.
