Under this law, homeowners may build one ADU up to 900 sq ft — or 50% of the main home, whichever is smaller — in single-family zones without requiring special permits.
ADUs built through ADU-PRO Corp can take several forms, including internal conversions such as basement or garage conversions, attached additions, or fully detached backyard cottages. Each unit must feature a separate entrance and meet safe egress standards. Importantly, there is no owner-occupancy requirement, meaning neither the homeowner nor the tenant is required to live on-site.
An ADU — sometimes referred to as a granny flat, in-law suite, or backyard cottage — is a secondary residential unit on the same lot as a primary home.
