About Alchemy Architects
Alchemy Architects is a Saint Paul, Minnesota-based architecture firm established in 1992 by Geoffrey C. Warner, FAIA. With a background in both traditional architectural design and on-site construction, Warner built a practice that combines a hands-on approach with a collaborative design process. The firm works closely with clients, builders, and fabricators to deliver thoughtful architectural solutions across the United States.
Alchemy's projects are guided by a commitment to building strategies that reduce waste and incorporate recycling and reuse wherever possible. Their design process is described as playful and collaborative, aiming to create structures that are both functional and architecturally considered.
The weeHouse System
In 2003, Alchemy designed and built the first weeHouse — originally conceived as an affordable prefabricated cabin for a rural getaway. That first structure, the Arado weeHouse, was situated near Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River and attracted significant international attention. It became a recognizable example of accessible, optimistic architecture.
From that starting point, Alchemy developed the weeHouse into a broader system of prefabricated structures. These include:
- Cabins and rural retreats
- Primary residences
- Office spaces
- Rooftop studios
- Multi-unit developments
To date, there are over five dozen prefabricated and site-built weeHouses — and larger not-so-weeHouses — completed across the United States.
ADU and Accessory Dwelling Unit Services
Among Alchemy's range of project types, their LightHouse line is specifically focused on accessory dwelling units (ADUs). These structures serve as a practical solution for homeowners looking to add a secondary living space to their property — whether as a backyard cottage, granny flat, in-law suite, or detached ADU. The LightHouse product reflects Alchemy's prefabrication expertise applied directly to the growing demand for flexible, smaller-scale residential units.
In addition to LightHouses, Alchemy works on a variety of other project types, including:
- BarnHouses — structures featuring lofted interiors
- Hybrid modular and panelized structures
- Custom homes
Alchemy Architects operates out of Saint Paul, Minnesota, and takes on projects throughout the United States. Their combination of prefabrication experience, sustainable building priorities, and design-focused approach makes them a notable option for those exploring ADU construction or broader residential architecture projects.
