About Plenium Builders

Logan's Retreat: A Purpose-Built ADU in Reno, NV

Located beside a main residence in Reno, NV, Logan's Retreat is an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) built to meet the specific needs of a family whose adult son requires additional daily support. Rather than pursuing conventional rental housing or a nearby property — options that proved both impractical and costly — the family chose to build a dedicated space that would allow their son to live independently while staying close to home.

The project was designed by architect Don Smit of Carson City, NV, whose contribution was formally recognized at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The design process required securing special permits and a considerable investment of time to develop a layout tailored to the family's accessibility requirements.

Design and Construction Approach

The clients were clear that they did not want a standard rectangular ADU. Working closely with the architect, they developed a distinctive footprint using low-maintenance materials. Plenium Builders collaborated with both the architect and the homeowners during the final stages of design, offering constructability input — particularly around major accessibility features — to make the most of the available space.

The exterior combines Trex cladding and corrugated metal panels, producing a modern, durable finish that stands out while still referencing the surrounding neighborhood's aesthetic. As a detached ADU builder, Plenium Builders ensured the structure fit within the required setbacks and height restrictions for the region. The finished structure sits in the rear yard and reaches just over 21 feet in height.

The rooflines and building materials were chosen to complement the primary residence, creating a cohesive appearance across the property. A connecting deck between the main house and the ADU reinforces this sense of integration while supporting the occupant's independent living.

Interior Features and Craftsmanship

Inside, the ADU prioritizes natural light, functionality, and comfort. Large windows throughout the home bring in substantial daylight, and a door lite with additional windows facing the connecting deck strengthens the visual link to the main residence. The interior is painted bright white, paired with warm wood flooring and textured tiles to add depth to the space.

Plenium Builders carried out all rough and finish carpentry work on the project, including:

  1. Deck construction
  2. Cabinet installation
  3. Appliance fitting
  4. Shelving and storage solutions

The kitchen includes full-sized appliances and a floating breakfast bar that extends across both sides of a kitchen window, creating an open, functional area for meals or casual use. The bathroom, while compact, makes efficient use of its footprint with high-end fixtures, easy-to-maintain tiles, and a window for natural light. A dedicated laundry room houses a 2-in-1 washer-dryer unit.

Additional features include a custom-built walk-in closet, a mini-split system for heating and cooling, and a flexible living and sleeping area designed to adapt to the occupant's daily routine.

Logan's Retreat demonstrates how a well-planned accessory dwelling unit can address specific family needs — combining accessibility, practicality, and considered design — without defaulting to a generic solution. Plenium Builders' involvement, from constructability input through to finish carpentry, reflects their role as an experienced ADU contractor capable of handling custom, detail-oriented builds.

"We finally found the team to turn our dated 1970s Incline Village house into the forever home we always wanted. After planning, designing and speaking to many contractors for over a year, we were referred to Plenium by our designer, and were so thankful. Before Plenium our choices seemed to be small contractors who could do smaller improvements like a single bath, window replacements etc; or larger contractors who focused on new home builds in the millions. Pleniums excellent project management, onsite construction foreman and excellent subcontractors exceeded our expectations. Our project uncovered many dangerous shortcuts from previous owners. We bought a property that was largely used a second home since the 70s; and the remodeling theme seemed to be fast and cheap. That is dangerous when you live in big winters like we do. Plenium was always focused on doing the right thing and fixing issues that might not emerge in years. It was hard to spend time and money on hidden mechanical, electrical and structural issues, but we quickly learned to trust the Plenium team. They remodeled our home as if their own families would be living full-time and someday inheriting the property as we do. Is Plenium the cheapest - no. But after a few remodeling projects over our lives, weve seen what low bid contractors do. Our project took 7 months to complete. We relocated out of the area during those months, flying in every two weeks to meet with the team and go over the remodel, budgets and change orders. Every day the team took pictures of their work that day and uploaded them to a project management portal. We had a group text with both the onsite foremen and project manager. Our monthly bills were organized down to the penny and always tied to the project budget plan. Weve never had a construction project so organized. Finally, Plenium really manages their subcontractors. The subs are high quality and most importantly, show up on time and stay on the job. Our neighbors commented they never saw the job site idle - there was never a business day someone from Plenium was not onsite working. If you want quick, cheap and frustrating - dont choose Plenium. But if you expect excellence in an all remodeling aspects - Plenium is your best choice."

"I cant say enough positive things about the Plenium team I had the pleasure of working with: Melanie, Ashley and Troy, and the subs they brought in. I have done 4 home construction remodels with other companies over the years and Pleniums professionalism, efficiency, quality of work, problem solving capacity, and patience have blown all those other experiences out of the water. Highly recommend."

"Speaking from my experience as an interior designer, Plenium is a top notch residential construction firm. They were willing to jump into a swift start up project with a demanding timeline, and were clear with my firm and the clients about what could get done and by when. Their level of communication and organization is impressive and their work meticulous. I would recommend Plenium to my fellow designers or architects as well as to homeowners."
