Logan's Retreat: A Purpose-Built ADU in Reno, NV
Located beside a main residence in Reno, NV, Logan's Retreat is an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) built to meet the specific needs of a family whose adult son requires additional daily support. Rather than pursuing conventional rental housing or a nearby property — options that proved both impractical and costly — the family chose to build a dedicated space that would allow their son to live independently while staying close to home.
The project was designed by architect Don Smit of Carson City, NV, whose contribution was formally recognized at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The design process required securing special permits and a considerable investment of time to develop a layout tailored to the family's accessibility requirements.
Design and Construction Approach
The clients were clear that they did not want a standard rectangular ADU. Working closely with the architect, they developed a distinctive footprint using low-maintenance materials. Plenium Builders collaborated with both the architect and the homeowners during the final stages of design, offering constructability input — particularly around major accessibility features — to make the most of the available space.
The exterior combines Trex cladding and corrugated metal panels, producing a modern, durable finish that stands out while still referencing the surrounding neighborhood's aesthetic. As a detached ADU builder, Plenium Builders ensured the structure fit within the required setbacks and height restrictions for the region. The finished structure sits in the rear yard and reaches just over 21 feet in height.
The rooflines and building materials were chosen to complement the primary residence, creating a cohesive appearance across the property. A connecting deck between the main house and the ADU reinforces this sense of integration while supporting the occupant's independent living.
Interior Features and Craftsmanship
Inside, the ADU prioritizes natural light, functionality, and comfort. Large windows throughout the home bring in substantial daylight, and a door lite with additional windows facing the connecting deck strengthens the visual link to the main residence. The interior is painted bright white, paired with warm wood flooring and textured tiles to add depth to the space.
Plenium Builders carried out all rough and finish carpentry work on the project, including:
- Deck construction
- Cabinet installation
- Appliance fitting
- Shelving and storage solutions
The kitchen includes full-sized appliances and a floating breakfast bar that extends across both sides of a kitchen window, creating an open, functional area for meals or casual use. The bathroom, while compact, makes efficient use of its footprint with high-end fixtures, easy-to-maintain tiles, and a window for natural light. A dedicated laundry room houses a 2-in-1 washer-dryer unit.
Additional features include a custom-built walk-in closet, a mini-split system for heating and cooling, and a flexible living and sleeping area designed to adapt to the occupant's daily routine.
Logan's Retreat demonstrates how a well-planned accessory dwelling unit can address specific family needs — combining accessibility, practicality, and considered design — without defaulting to a generic solution. Plenium Builders' involvement, from constructability input through to finish carpentry, reflects their role as an experienced ADU contractor capable of handling custom, detail-oriented builds.
