About Carbide Construction

Carbide Construction: Modular Additions and Accessory Dwelling Units in Northern Virginia

Carbide Construction is a Northern Virginia-based construction company that opened its Modular Construction division in 2002. This expansion allowed them to broaden their service offerings and incorporate more eco-friendly building practices. They work with established manufacturers including Signature Building Systems, Excel Homes and its affiliates, as well as other modular home producers.

Their modular construction process follows a structured approach. It begins with an analysis of the existing house location survey to determine project feasibility. From there, the design and engineering phase is established, followed by preliminary pricing from the modular manufacturer. Subcontractor pricing runs concurrently, and final pricing is confirmed once drawings are complete.

For those considering a new modular home, Carbide Construction manages the project from design through to installation. All elements of the home are prefabricated in a factory setting, then transported and assembled on-site by their contractors. Each component is built to the client's specifications, giving homeowners a degree of control over the final outcome.

In-Law Suites and Accessory Dwelling Units

As multigenerational living becomes more common, Carbide Construction offers in-law suites and accessory dwelling units (ADUs) as modular additions. These spaces can range from a simple bedroom and bathroom setup to a more complete apartment-style unit with a separate entrance, full kitchen, and living area.

As an ADU builder and in-law suite builder, Carbide Construction constructs these additions off-site, which helps minimize disruption to the existing household during the build process. Once complete, the addition is attached to the existing home. Each suite can be customized to suit the needs and budget of the homeowner.

Carbide Construction also offers detached ADU options — separate structures that are not physically connected to the main house. Whether attached or detached, these units provide an independent living space while keeping family members nearby. This makes them a practical solution for housing aging parents, in-laws, or other relatives.

Their ADU services position them as both an accessory dwelling unit builder and a granny flat builder serving the Arlington area and surrounding Northern Virginia communities.

ADA-Compliant Modular Additions

Carbide Construction also builds modular additions designed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. For clients who need an accessible living space, they offer custom prefabricated additions that incorporate ADA specifications into the design from the outset.

An ADA-accessible modular addition from Carbide Construction may include features such as:

  1. Wider hallways and doorways to accommodate wheelchair users
  2. Non-slip flooring and ramps for fall prevention
  3. Closets with bifold doors for easier access for those with mobility challenges
  4. Other modifications tailored to the specific needs of the household

The process for an ADA addition follows the same steps as any other modular home addition Carbide Construction undertakes. Clients are guided through each phase, from initial design to final installation, with the necessary accessibility features incorporated throughout.

Overall, Carbide Construction offers a range of modular construction services in Northern Virginia, with a particular focus on home additions, detached ADU builds, and in-law suite construction. Their work with established modular manufacturers and their structured project process makes them a contractor worth considering for those exploring ADU or modular addition options in the region.

"We did a modular 2nd story on our 1st story down in Richmond. Time saving product once delivery. However took 14 months for delivery. Recommend you bring your own architect, it's worth the extra cost to have another pair of eyes on plans for an investment this big. In the end, we paid about 300sq foot with homeowner acting as GC after the week of installation. Total construction was about 4 months once we got going. I'd use them again, however I'd add clause to contract that price either goes down or contract is terminated after so many months without delivery."

"David and Adam at Carbide are nearing completion of a modular build on our 1940s Cape Code that almost doubled the square footage of our house. We could not be happier with how it turned out. Home renovation is daunting to say the least and a huge expense. Carbide walked us through the process patiently from start to finish. From the initial conversations, to design, financing, choosing finishes and the actual construction itself, David and Adam answered our incessant questions and made thoughtful and informed recommendations along the way. Their attention to detail has been excellent, often nitpicking things that I never would have even noticed. The house is beautiful. But honestly though, the reason I above all that I whole heartedly endorse Carbide is that they are GOOD guys. In an industry where you never know who you can trust, David and Adam are kind and ethical and do what's right to complete your project. They were open and honest with costs, what was going well, what they were worrying about. I never for one minute worried about their integrity or shoddy craftmanship. They felt like family for the time we spent together. My advice if you are considering Carbide for a modular build - 1. Do it! It's life changing! 2. Ask all the questions. Contractors manage multiple projects at once and don't always anticipate what your questions might be. Operate in a "pull mode" for communication and you will always get whatever information you need! 3. Don't underestimate the disruption of living in your house during a rebuild. It is 100 doable and a choice I would make again, but I definitely underestimated the impact it would have on daily life for a few months! 4. Choose Carbide! You will spend a lot of time with your contractors for a few months. Feeling like you can trust them to have your best interests at the center of the project is so important to your sanity and success. Thanks David and Adam, we are forever grateful."
