"We entered into a contract with AKD Homes on Aug. 15 2023 in Marin Co. CA. The first part of the process involves plans, drawings, permit process and surveying to the property. The sub-contractors: surveyors, engineers , plumbers were all showing up to my house unannounced. A simple phone call or text when somebody is showing up to your house would be nice. Talked to AKD about this. Occasionally I would get a phone call in the morning if someone was showing up that day, but mostly people just showed up. The permit process, which was suppose to take 2 months, was getting close to 2 years. Their general manager was concerned and wanted to have a meeting with the Marin Co. planning commission to find out what the hang up was. I decided to have a meeting with the planning commission, by myself. To find out what was going on. I asked "what's the hang-up? and why is this taking so long?" The planning commission said that their was nothing unusual about our permit. It was that AKD was taking 3 to 4 months to response to their permit changes. They showed me on their computer. They showed me contractors who responded in a timely matter only took weeks to complete their permits. And the fact that AKD general manager thought the delay was Marin Co. I did not know what's was going on? But it's not good. During the permit process the changes were never run by me, to approve. I had to ask to see my drawings. So we were at a point of the project where they were going to start tearing a part my property, essentially a point of no return. With all the delays, the project already 30K over budget, and mis-steps at every facets of this project to this point. The decision was made to cancel this project. The incredible finish to the story here, 3 days after I canceled the work. I had a knock on my door. It was a plumbing sub-contractor. Wanting to do another sewer inspection. I had one before but because of the delay I needed another. Which I was going to be charged for, even though the delay was caused by AKD. I apologized to him for making the unnecessary trip. In summary, things were going to continue with more delays and me asking the bank for more money. For this amount of money I should look forward to it. Instead it was something I was dreading and stressing over. It was a very hard decision walking away from a significant amount of deposit money, but in the long run probably a wise one."

"The AKD team had our backs from beginning until the end of the project. Building Converting a garage in your backyard into a one bedroom one bathroom unit is more complicated than we have thought or have even imagined it. There could be a lot of surprises and even the weather was not very cooperative heavy rainy season however AKD team made sure we were updated and aware of any problems. The team would still show up even with heavy rains . Professional, Reliable, Upfront and simply very pleasant people to work it.
