ADU Development Masterclass: Learn from the Experts

Beyond their direct services, ADU Geeks also offers an online, self-paced ADU Development Masterclass — a comprehensive educational resource designed for homeowners, investors, and developers looking to build a successful accessory dwelling unit in California.

The course is taught by a team of industry professionals, including specialists in feasibility and due diligence, construction, finance, and property and asset management. It covers every stage of the ADU development journey, from feasibility and design through to financing, construction, and ongoing management.

Key features of the masterclass include:

  1. Approximately 40 educational videos with comprehension quizzes at the end of each module
  2. Online, self-paced format accessible at any time
  3. A Certificate of Completion upon finishing 100% of the course
  4. Downloadable resources and tools applicable directly to real ADU projects
  5. Step-by-step guidance through feasibility, design, financing, construction, and management

Most learners complete the course in approximately 4–6 hours, depending on their pace. While examples are drawn primarily from California and the San Diego area, the core process and principles covered apply broadly to ADU development in other markets as well.

The masterclass is available for a one-time payment of $150, and a 7-day refund policy is offered for those who are unsatisfied. For those not yet ready to commit, the first three videos are available to watch for free.

" 1 Star Review Our experience with ADU Geeks has been extremely disappointing. We began working with them nearly two years ago with the goal of building an ADU on our property in Los Angeles, and despite that amount of time passing, construction has still not started. Throughout this process, the biggest challenge has been the lack of consistent communication and overall project management. Over the course of our time working with the company, it has been very difficult to get clear updates on the status of our project. Many emails and phone calls requesting updates have gone unanswered or required repeated follow-ups before receiving a response. When we do hear back, it is often from a different person each time, which makes it difficult to maintain continuity or understand who is responsible for the project. We have not had a dedicated point of contact managing our account from the beginning, which has made the process feel disorganized and frustrating. Based on our experience, it appears that the company may not have the operational resources or structure needed to effectively manage projects in the Los Angeles area. Building an ADU is a major investment, relying heavily on clear communication, transparency, and consistent project oversight throughout the process. Unfortunately, those are areas where our experience has fallen short. While others may have different experiences, our personal experience working with ADU Geeks has been frustrating and has resulted in significant delays. Because of this, I cannot recommend ADU Geeks for ADU projects in Los Angeles."

"Run away from these scam artists! Poor communication, sloppy work, lies and more lies. They designed our ADU without any design specs for the roofing. We asked for the missing design element repeatedly. No replies. So our building contractor guessed three times, failing city inspections, costing us thousands extra in labor. Finally ADU Geeks gave us - I'm not joking - a hand-drawn sketch of the design. It was like a second grader's art project. The contractor couldn't understand it. The city inspector laughed at it. Finally, CEO Xavier responded to us. He said they would give us the missing roofing design for 675 more. Classic fraud move. Trap the customer in a corner, ask for more . Hoping to leave ADU Geeks in the rearview mirror, I paid the ransom. The same day the city inspector took pity on us. He designed the roofing correctly for us. I asked Xavier for the 675 back. He agreed. I have two emails from him promising to send a check. That was four months ago. Run away!!"

"Poor communication, poor customer service, very slow work, expensive and not open to customer feedback. I started on this project with ADU Geeks on July 2023 where I paid for a project analysisfeasibility study and talked about what I wanted for the project. 2 members of ADU Geeks were there and I told them I wanted the entrance on the right side of the building. This was very important to me. They said it can be done. Everything seemed great and I decided to move forward with them. I get the first design back and the entrance is on the left side through my neighbor's front yard and now they tell me the entrance can't be on the right side. They didn't even communicate this with me prior to completing the design. Xavier was able to assist with this and move the entrance to the backyard which now required a topographical survey. The quote for the survey was 3x the amount stated on the feasibility study. Xavier explained that the estimates are based on other projects. This made me question ALL the numbers on the feasibility study and just assumed they're all inaccurate. Why did I pay for a feasibility study in the first place? The first submission to the city took about a year and 7 months. Along the way, every change small or big took at least 3 weeks. I even asked Xavier if I could sit with the designer for 30 minutes to finalize it and save potentially at least a month of back and forth. He brushed me off and said that's not how they do things. There were so many times changes were made to the design without communicating it with me. I've been passed along 3-4 project coordinators and 2 different designers. They don't have the knowledge of an architect so it was difficult getting hard questions answered. I had to repeat my questions word by word because it is obviously getting ignored because they don't know the answer. I finally spoke to their architect at the very end where he voiced his concerns about design. This company is more marketing than action, sadly. Frustrating and disappointing experience..."

"Im a very active commercial real estate agent and investor in San Diego. Dealing with the city permitting department is a long and lengthy process with delays and surprises at every turn. Sometimes it feels like going 2 steps forward and 1 foot backwards, especially with a complex project like I have converting 5 attached garages into 5 micro ADUs. I am 1.5 years in and still a few months from completion with the project. Thankfully I have had ADU geeks to help me navigate the design process, commercial building code, city ROW, contractor references, etc... Even after plans were approved by the city, we hit a roadblock with the water dept that caused me to go back to the drawing board and actually upgrade a waterline and submit plan changes with the city. ADU geeks came back to the rescue and helped me navigate that. I would dread the process of dealing with the city myself. thank god for ADUgeeks. Xavier, Kalani, and their team have made the permitting process bearable. Just be prepared for a lot of delays from the city, and don't be afraid to ping them on your project regularly for clarity."
