About Hug Construction

About Hug Construction

Hug Construction is a construction company based in the Inland Northwest, serving clients across Spokane County, Lincoln County, Stevens County, and Pend Oreille County in Washington, as well as Bonner County and Kootenai County in Idaho. Founded by Titus Hug, who relocated to Spokane from Eastern Oregon over two decades ago, the company has grown from a one-person operation into a team of more than 50 full-time professionals working across multiple trades and departments.

From the beginning, the focus has been on serving clients well through structured processes, transparent communication, and consistent accountability. The company operates around four core values: Honor, Hustle, Humility, and Honesty — principles that shape how they work with clients, subcontractors, and employees alike.

Construction Services Offered

Hug Construction handles a range of project types, including custom home builds, remodeling and additions, commercial construction, and accessory dwelling units (ADUs). As an experienced ADU contractor, they guide clients through every phase of the process — from planning and budgeting to permitting and construction. Whether the goal is multigenerational living, rental income, or added flexibility, their team applies the same structured approach used on larger projects to every accessory dwelling unit build.

For custom homes, they work closely with clients from the initial planning meeting through to the final walkthrough, maintaining defined schedules and fixed budgets throughout. Their remodeling services are approached with disciplined planning and organized decision-making, helping homeowners expand or improve their existing spaces without losing control of timeline or budget.

Commercial clients — including business owners and developers — benefit from the same coordination and clarity. Hug Construction aligns scope, schedule, and budget from the outset to support both immediate operational needs and long-term performance goals.

How They Manage Projects

Hug Construction uses a clearly defined project management approach that sets them apart from many general contractors. Key elements of their process include:

  1. Fixed bids with straight dollar-for-dollar pricing — no additional fees or markups on budget lines that go over
  2. A fixed, week-by-week schedule covering the full duration of the project
  3. A guaranteed weekly update every Friday outlining current progress, completed work, and any outstanding items
  4. A 2-year warranty on all work — double the industry standard
  5. Full-time selection staff who guide clients through every material and finish choice, passing along any discounts they receive
  6. Cloud-based project management software that centralizes proposals, schedules, daily updates, invoices, and change orders
  7. In-house field crews that help maintain schedules and reduce the delays common when relying entirely on subcontractors

Unlike contractors who have moved to a cost-plus pricing model, Hug Construction remains committed to fixed bids, keeping the financial risk on their side rather than shifting it to the client. Any discounts they receive on materials or selections are passed directly to the client rather than absorbed as additional margin.

Their experienced management team is available to address questions and concerns promptly, and their in-house production crews allow them to maintain tighter control over scheduling and quality. With 25 years in business, they have the track record to stand behind their warranty commitments long after a project is complete.

Beyond construction, Hug Construction is involved in community efforts through their connection with Heroes of the Nation, reflecting a broader commitment to contributing positively to the communities they serve across the Inland Northwest.

"The entire team at Hug has been incredible. The office staff was very helpful above abd beyond throughout the process of making selections and answering financial questions. The work crews from demolition to finish work were skilled, professional and polite and always left the work site cleaned up at the end of the day. Our project manager, Matt was always very responsive when we called with questions or issues . He maintained a very active role throughout the project . Matt was "Client Focused!" Communication throughout the process was very transparent either through direct communication with staff when possible or 247 utilizing the Buildertrend application. We are very happy with our new bathroom, walk-in closet, family room floors and slider!"

"It's tough to pick a rating for Hug. On one hand, it was definitely not the experience we wanted for our remodel, but on the other, compared to what I have heard from other people with other contractor experiences, it really was better than average. First, the good: -They were always courteous and generally responsive to our requests and inquiries -The project was completed nearly on time and close to the original estimate, which from what I understand of construction is a rarity -Other than a few glaring issues, the quality really is quite good, and we are happy with the final product So why only two stars? -Painting quality: our single biggest issue. During the process of talking to various team members, we were told that the painting had been done by an apprentice and that they failed to have it reviewed by a more senior painter in time to do anything. The house is filled with spots where paint bled through the tape onto surfaces where it wasn't supposed to be, and while they tried to clean it up after the fact, there was ultimately no way to fix it. Beyond that, there is paint splatter everywhere, including all over our wooden fireplace mantel they came back and cleaned it off, but in the process they also stripped all of the aged varnish that was on it, at least one window and the newly installed hardware in the bathroom. The longer we're here, the more we find issues with the paint. They did ultimately give us a small refund for the paint quality, which we appreciated, but what we wanted was a good job, not a cheap one. -Internal communication: there were three main Hug employees that we worked with, plus the electrician who was a subcontractor. Frequently one party would tell us we could do something only for that to either not make it into the plan or for another member to tell us it would be impossible. -Electrical plan: this could be included under communication, but I think it deserves its own bullet. At no point during the project was there any sort of review or signoff on what the electricians would do. No maps of lights or switches, no selection of fixtures, etc. The only planning we did was with a representative from the subcontractor, who walked through with us discussing what we wanted and taking minimal notes. This led to multiple rounds of revisions, including change orders for several thousand dollars. There was a stark contrast between the level of planning that went into the electrical work and the rest of the project, like cabinets and countertops. There were other minor annoyances, like the quality of cleanup and the disregard for our property that was left in the house in areas not specifically being worked on, but none of that really compares with our dissatisfaction on the above items. We chose Hug, despite them being more expensive than competitors, because we assumed that the higher price tag would mean a clean, professional final product. Ultimately, we don't feel like that's what we got. Last two photos are before the remodel. The rest are of the final product"

"Hug was willing to work with me within my budget to make my project happen. Everyone I worked with from Hug was responsive and understanding to our needs. We ultimately finished the project ourselves painting, trim, etc to stay within our budget. But none of it could have happened without Hug doing the major build. We are totally enjoying our expanded Bedroom, kitchen, master bath and reworked stairs to the basement."

"HUG did a fantastic job on our upstairs remodeling project, which included our kitchen dining living laundry rooms, entry and hallway, and master bath. Custom fireplace build, custom shower and a one-of-a-kind custom stairwell railing are just part of the project that they undertook for us. Josh and his team kept everyone on track, on time and on budget. We used HUG previously to do a complete remodel of our basement, and didn't hesitate to reach out to them again for this project. We absolutely love our "new" home and would highly recommend HUG Construction to anyone looking for remodel or custom build work!"
